Winners of the city of Thornton’s 2018 Business Recognition Awards were announced recently at the 31st annual Business Appreciation Event held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel. The awards and their recipients this year are:
Entrepreneurial Innovation Award – Frolic Play Space
This award recognizes a small Thornton business that brings a unique business concept with ingenuity and determination to the Thornton community while practicing positive workplace values. Frolic, located in the Hilltop Village Shopping Center at 136th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard, is a unique play and party space built for kids under seven years of age. They offer open play, parties, and classes such as dance and yoga.
Community Spirit Award – Center for People with Disabilities
This award recognizes a Thornton business that demonstrates strong involvement in the community and/or who has made a significant impact on the community. CFPWD, located in the Washington Street Medical and Professional Center at 10317 Washington Street, provides Independent Living Services in five counties, providing core services in Independent Living Skills, Advocacy, Information and Referral, and Peer Support.
Company on the Move Award – Hearthside Dentistry
This award recognizes a Thornton business that demonstrates a solid success pattern and/or tremendous growth potential, expanding lines of business through innovation and improved processes. Located in the Larkridge Shopping Center at Hwy 7 and I-25, Hearthside is a privately owned practice that has steadily increased in size and service offerings since opening.
Retailer of the Year Award – Total Beverage
Retailer of the Year recognizes a Thornton retail business who has shown excellent customer service, unique product/service offerings, and has improved the retail experience for consumers. Total Beverage is a one-stop destination in the Thornton area for everything you can think to drink! Located in the Washington Plaza Shopping Center at 104th Avenue and Washington Street, they carry over 2,000 craft beers, 5,000 wines and 3,500 spirits. They also offer free in-store tastings, weekly events and contests, same-day delivery, in-store and curbside pickup options, and shipping.
Industrial/Office Company of the Year – Hensel Phelps Construction Company
This award is selected by the Thornton Office of Economic Development, and recognizes a Thornton primary business that has demonstrated growth, innovation and/or significant potential for the community. Hensel Phelps, located in the Avaya building at 120th Avenue and Grant Street, plans with ingenuity, builds with integrity, and manages with assurance. Projects developed by Hensel Phelps include the History Colorado Center, Denver Justice Center, and the Ameristar Casino Black Hawk Hotel and Resort.
People’s Choice Award – Mother Tucker Brewery
This award is chosen by popular vote. After decades in corporate America, Scott and Deb Tucker decided to chase their dream of opening a brewery. Located near 120th Avenue and Irma Street, Mother Tucker’s has 12 beers on rotation, offers a great space to gather with friends, and hosts many events such as Trivia Night throughout the year.
Program Partner of the Year – FirstBank
This award is given in recognition of a local business or organization who was especially pivotal in the administration of a city of Thornton business program or project. FirstBank is Colorado’s largest locally owned holding company with over 115 locations in Colorado, California, and Arizona. FirstBank of Thornton helped the City of Thornton Economic Development Office implement the South Thornton Attraction & Revitalization grant, which is designed to enhance and revitalize commercial areas in the South Thornton Development Area.
During the event, guest emceed by Gregg Moss, President of the Metro North Chamber of Commerce and Thornton Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Heidi Williams gave her State of the City address, and former Denver Broncos running back Reggie Rivers was the keynote speaker.
